The Friday Night Lights shine brightly in the Kanto plain of central Japan. We attended a game here tonight on Yokota Air Force Base with the Saenz family. It was a mild contest with the Yokota Panthers versus the Yokosuka Red Devils. The game was pretty low key by South Texas standards, but it was still exciting to watch. Even high school-aged American students attending schools on military bases can enjoy the experience of a football game in faraway Japan. It's all here; the cheerleaders, the band, the announcer in the press box, the concession stand being run by parents whose kids they are raising money for are running about testing the limits of their hormonally-charged adolescence. The spirit of football game night was there tonight. It stirred up some of the homesickness I had managed to suppress.
