Cómo Has Subido

We were zipping through traffic yesterday on our way back from the Yokosuka Museum of Art when Melba turns to me and says, Cómo has subido!" It was a rib directed at my driving. After buying our used car two months ago I was terrified just to drive it from the MWR Used Car Lot to our tower. That first ride covered only a third of a mile with no traffic, not that there ever is. It was less than a two-minute drive and I can remember repeatedly mouthing the phrase "left, left, left" as I inched along. Making our way back to the base that afternoon Melba appreciated the progress we had made in regards to self-transportation.

The Yokosuka Museum of Art is only a six mile drive east along the scenic coastal highway. It opened in April of last year. Carved out of the surrounding hills, the museum is in a prime location facing the ocean with its back to the park forest. It houses an impressive 4500 piece collection, mostly contemporary Japanese works. What I liked best about the place was that it sat isolated along the coastal road, far from any development. The design is simple and elegant with an open and airy quality to it. It features an expansive garden that ties the rear of the museum to the hillsides with hiking trails that wind through old military fortifications being reclaimed by forest growth.

These days I hardly need to remind myself to stay "left, left, left." I "borrowed" the picture below.
